Green with Irony

hybrid

Gordon and I recently attended the Green Living Show (a fantastic event showcasing eco-friendly alternatives for daily living) in the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place.

We drove to the show in Gord’s family van and descended into the depths of the underground garage in search of a place to park. We sighed in despair as we realized that all the convenient spaces near the entrance were reserved for hybrid vehicles and, alas, the Pontiac Montana was still kicking it old school in the gas-guzzling sort of way. So we drove around in circles until we finally found a spot, and started our trek towards the door.

As we passed by the Reserved for Hybrid Vehicles sign, we were suddenly struck by the irony of it all: The most fuel efficient, eco-friendly cars had the smallest distance to drive for parking, whereas the rest of the petroleum burning, eco-destructive cars had the greatest distance to travel.

Oh sweet sweet irony.

Would it not make more sense for those eco-conscience drivers to reinforce their environmental commitment by walking a little further?

Off course I say all this in jest, I really do believe that people should be rewarded for making eco-friendly purchases such as hybrid cars, I guess I’m just green with irony.
